Who will speak on:
European Mannerism and Parmigianino Manners
Mannerism holds a special place in twentieth-century intellectual history. Initially applied by art historians to characterise Italian paintings and sculptures produced from the 1520s onwards, Mannerism has penetrated the fields of literature, music, and philosophy. What was initially considered a period of Italian art has become a recurring stylistic phenomenon. After a brief survey of the main aspects of scholarship on Mannerism, this lecture focuses on one of the main founders of this style, the Italian painter Francesco Mazzola, known as il Parmigianino (1501-1540). In order to explore how mannerist is Parmigianino, and what his work can tell us about so-called Renaissance Mannerism, Dr Quiviger’s lecture examines the various manners he adopted to represent himself and his practice as a painter.
